What is the purpose of the EWSG?

The purpose of the Esoteric World Service Group is to help identify other spiritually focused, service-oriented groups and individuals. This section describes select service opportunities for personal and planetary transformation and shares information, resources and contacts grounded in the Western Esoteric Traditions.

Examples of Western Esoteric Traditions include Ageless Wisdom Teachings, Agni Yoga, Esoteric Christianity, Freemasonry, Gnosticism, Kabbalah, Martinism, Rosicrucian, Teachings of the Temple, and Theosophy. These and others are described in the writings of Alice Bailey, H.P. Blavatsky, Helena Roerich, Lucille Cedercrans, Master Beinsa Douno, Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov, Torkom Saraydarian, Daskalos, Bishop Lewis Keizer, Bishop Christine Payne-Towler, Olive Pixley, or Bishop Rosamonde Miller. A thorough exploration of these links can provide a deep introduction to these advanced Initiatic Teachings.

To learn more about some of these Initiatic Teachings you may also find it useful to contact groups such as the American Temple, Old Templar Church, Magi Group, Mesa Works, Order of the Grail, the Work of the Chariot, Arcane School, the Abwoon Study Group, Meditation Mount, the System for the Research of Truth, the Science of Man, Gnostique, Templar Research Institute, Order of Druids in Ulster, Center for Spiritual Awareness, and the Sophia Foundation.

"How do we learn to serve? By serving. How do we learn to give? By giving. What is the reward of service? Greater and expanded service."- Mother Jenny

What is Service?

One way to define service is to think of it as making a contribution to the welfare of others. The urge to serve might be experienced as a heart-felt, soul-inspired response to some need we become aware of. This need is the need or situation of an animal, another person, group, community, state, nation, or planet. We see or hear about a need and feel an urge or inner prompting to take action. It's been said a sense of responsibility is the first major expression of soul contact, the second an urge to serve (give/share). Saraydarian, in his book The Ageless Wisdom tells us "The whole aim of the student of the Ageless Wisdom must be: How can I make myself ready to be useful in meeting the needs of humanity in higher and higher fields of responsibility?"

Esoteric Service as an Exchange of Force and Energy

Looking at service from another angle, it can be seen as an exchange of force and energy. From this view, what we call "giving" is the streaming out of forces and energies received from higher non-physical levels. To use an analogy, we could say the body is to soul, as wire is to electricity and just like electricity, for flow to occur it needs a third point outside itself. The point is this; if energy flows down from higher levels through the soul to the physical world, (like electricity flowing through a wire), and if the body is where these potential energies are stored (like an electrical capacitor), then in order to flow (or discharge) they must be grounded and connected to another point outside oneself. Without giving (providing an outlet), blockage can occur. Using this example we can voluntarily, consciously, and purposefully serve as a conduit for love to flow into the world. The following formula suggests how this can be done; Invoke --> (ask for Blessing) --> Commune (receive Blessing) --> Serve (distribute Blessing) --> Evoke (return Blessing).

"Put aside all prejudices and, summoning thy spiritual forces, aid mankind. Not for revelations, but for service, did I summon thee." - Master Morya

What can I do, I'm only one person?

Need is present all around us, for example in our relationships with family, friends, and associates. Here, working on an individual basis, we have opportunities to practice patience, forgiveness, compassion, right-thought, right-speech, right-action and right-employment. In the privacy of our homes each of us can serve via personal purity practices (cleaning up our own act), meditating, joining in prayers for peace, blessing, helping, writing, teaching, mentoring, counseling, healing, donating, creating inspiring artistical works of joy and beauty, and many other ways. Each of us can make a commitment to do a deeper study of World Goodwill and one of the Problems of Humanity and then do something to help resolve it. We can pay attention to what is going on in the world and take notice of examples of goodwill in action. We can meditate and ponder over concepts like unity, synthesis, truth, goodness, beauty, joy, compassion, and thus help strengthen the collective thought-form of these vital energies and then apply our learnings in daily life.

We can help send forth light into the world via daily participation in the network of Triangles or other service activities of the Arcane School or the Theosophical Order of Service. We can link mentally with countless others in sending daily prayers for our those who are ill via the Distant Healing Network, prayers for the dying via the Pious Order of St. Joseph, or for world leaders that they will be inspired to do what is best for all humanity. We can participate in several special meditations that take place on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis. We can assist in mailing out World Goodwill Literature or copies of the Great Invocation or the Manifesto Positio Fraternitatis Rosae Crucis. We can also participate in liturgical and other focused group work, even voting!

True, the need is overwhelming and we all must work in accordance with our own limitations. We are reminded, on the other hand, that as personalities, we often underestimate our capacities. One of the purposes of the EWSG is to suggest that you personally can make a positive difference and to give you ideas and resources for doing so. Considering the distribution part of formula, we can ask ourselves; Who are the people I can help today? How can I help enhance goodwill and right human relationships? How can I help spread love, and understanding?

If we feel drawn to help children, we might choose to support the work of Unicef or ChildReach International or look into volunteering for organizations such as Guardian Ad Litem or the Big Brother/Big Sister program. If we feel drawn to work with seniors in need, we may consider working as an Omsbudsman or Hospice. For descriptions of thousands of service opportunities in the community, nation, or world, check out Action Without Borders.

Collectively we can participate in similar forums such as the World Transformation Organization or Meditation Mount. We can seek out our brothers and sisters and support/join with them in their endeavors such as in Humanity's Team. We can participate in any worthy charitable organization involved in providing basic human needs or protecting human rights such as Unicef, Childreach, the American Red Cross, Amnesty International the United Nations, or hundreds of others listed in sites such as One World OnLine.

"You will ask what your service is to be? That will grow out of your meditation. It is not for me to tell you what activity your personality must follow, it is your own soul which must do so." - Master DK

As the Tibetan Master Dwal Khul states; "I care not where or to who you give, only that you give, - little if you have but little of time and money, much if you have much. Work and give, love and think, and aid those groups who are building and not destroying, loving and not attacking, lifting and not tearing down. I ask you to recognize your fellow workers in all groups and to strengthen their hands. I ask you to seal your lips to words of hatred and of criticism, and talk in terms of brotherhood (and sisterhood) and of group relations. If you cannot teach or preach or write, give of your thought and of your money, so that others can. Give of your hours and minutes of leisure, so as to set others free to serve the Plan; give of your money, so that the work of those associated with the New Group of World Servers may go forward with rapidity."

"Let humanity constitute your field of service; and may it be said of you that you knew the spiritual facts, and were a dynamic part of these spiritual events; may it not be said of you that you knew these things and did nothing about them, and failed to exert yourself." - Master DK

As the great Master Jesus taught; "It is better to give than to receive. It is in giving that the soul prospers ... For in the measure that you give will it be measured out to you, for good or for ill; therefore do unto mankind as you would have heaven do unto you ... And from him who little has been given, little will be required; but from him unto much has been given, much will be required ... to those who use what they have, more will be given; but for those who neglect or abuse it, even what they have will be taken away."

"Faithfulness without works is dead; for faith consists of deeds, and not words ... in as much as you have done it unto the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me." - Master Jesus
